Frequently Asked Questions
Before using a kinesiology tape it’s advised you consult with a physical therapist who is trained in the proper application of kinesiology tape
The therapist will show you how to apply the tape in the pattern that will help whatever issue you have.
To apply the tape, focus on the following:
• Ensure the area is clean and dry. Avoid lotions and oils they can prevent the tape from sticking
• Trim any excess hair to help the tape get a good grip on the skin
• Start by reading the backing paper in the centre and cut rounded counters at the end of each step
• Apply the first tab to anchor the step and let the end recoil.
• Make sure you don’t stretch the ends so the tap doesn’t pull your skin which can cause irritation or make the tape less adhesive.
• Keep your fingers on the backing paper to hold the tape and then you can now stretch to know to touch the treatment area properly as prescribed by your therapist.
• After you apply the tape, rub the strip vigorously for seconds, this is to make the glue get activated. Full adhesion takes about 20 minutes.
Although the efficacy of using a kinesiology tape is not well established, it is known to provide support, increase circulation, and reduce pain for the patient.
Physiotherapists use different types of devices in their practice based on the condition to be treated. Examples of such devices are electric stimulators, walking canes, cryotherapy units, crutches, massage chairs and a variety of walkers.
The tape was made to stay on for about 3-4 days. After 1-2 hours of normal body activity, the tape should be properly bonded to the treatment area.
A kinesio tape is best used when you need additional support for a range of motion in your ankle. For example, if you’re back to physical activity after an injury.
Physical therapy is a traditional and non-invasive way of treating pain. And it can sometimes be preferred over surgery. This is because it comes with less pain and complications than surgery and it also strengthens the body and increases mobility.
