The main difference between alcohol-based and alcohol-free hand sanitisers is the alcohol content. The alcohol added to the content can be ethanol, ethyl alcohol or isopropanol or 2-propanol.
Non-alcohol sanitisers are as effective against harmful microorganisms as alcohol-based sanitisers but have the advantage of creating longer-lasting protection on the skin.
https://mediworld.co.uk/medical/hand-sanitisers/ are very effective at killing harmful microorganisms, although they can't kill all the germs or viruses on your hands.
The alcohol present in the sanitiser kills germs by denaturing them (breaking down the cell walls), but it is ineffective against some germs, for example, Norovirus.
According to the https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show-me-the-science-hand-sanitizer.html (CDC) for the effective usage and function of hand sanitiser, it must be used correctly. This means the proper amount must be well applied and in the right places until both hands are dry.
It’s also important not to wash or wipe your hands after applying the sanitiser.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers should have at least 60% ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol present in them
Applying hand sanitiser on your hands will only last for about 2 minutes. After the alcohol fully evaporates, a thin waterproof layer is formed to further prevent bacteria-killing capacity from reducing. This can last 24 hours even with gentle handwashing.
A typical hand sanitiser should expire after 2 to 3 years.
