Frequently Asked Questions

Ultrasonic nebulisers are the best for asthma, they do not require a compressor and hence are much more compact. They also give treatment faster than jet nebulizers and do not require mixing saline with the patient’s asthma medication.
Also, they can be operated by battery, which makes them more portable.
A vibrating mesh nebuliser is effective for a person with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, they are the newest, more handheld and more portable than the jet nebuliser although the jet nebuliser is the only nebuliser that has no COPD medication restrictions.

The steps in using a nebuliser are as follows:

  • You wash your hands.
  • Connect the nebuliser hose to an air compressor.
  • Fill the medicine cup with your medicine and to avoid spills, close the medicine cup tightly and always hold the mouthpiece straight up and down.
  • Fix the other end of the hose to the mouthpiece of the nebuliser and medicine cup.
  • Turn on the nebulizer machine.
  • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth,  and make sure to keep your lips firmly around the mouthpiece so that all of the medicine goes into your lungs. If you are making use of a face mask, place it over the mouth and nose.
  • Breathe through your mouth until all the medicine is used up. And this may take 5 to 20 minutes depending on the device and medicine in use.
  • Once you’re done turn off the nebuliser
  • Make sure to wash the medicine cup and mouthpiece properly with water and air dry until your next treatment.

A nebuliser can be used up to four times daily if the medical condition is stable. In some cases, consulting doctor can suggest that the nebuliser be used more frequently.

Nebulisers are medical equipment used by patients with asthma or another respiratory condition to administer the medication directly and quickly to the lungs. You need a nebuliser if you have a respiratory condition which requires you to inhale medication to clear your airways or to treat infections.

• Antibiotics can be put inside a  nebuliser to treat and prevent infections
• Bronchodilators, these are drugs that open up your airways
• The hypertonic saline solution also known as medical grade water solution can be put inside a nebuliser, these loosen mucus in the airways and make it easier to cough up.

Yes, nebulisers are safe for children when used as directed by a healthcare provider. They are commonly used in managing respiratory conditions in children.

An inhaler is a handheld device that delivers a puff of medicine during inhalation. In contrast, a nebuliser turns liquid medicine into a mist, making it easier to inhale, especially suitable for those who may have difficulty using inhalers, such as children and the elderly.

Yes, a nebuliser is generally safe for the lungs. It delivers medication directly to the respiratory tract, allowing for targeted treatment of respiratory conditions.

The best liquid or medication for a nebuliser depends on the individual's specific respiratory condition and the healthcare provider’s prescription, whether it's a bronchodilator, corticosteroid, or other medication.

The best type of nebuliser depends on the individual's specific needs and the healthcare provider’s recommendations. Jet nebulisers are common, but ultrasonic or mesh nebulisers may be chosen for their portability and quieter operation.
