Frequently Asked Questions

An ECG can suggest the presence of heart blockage by indicating patterns consistent with ischemia or previous myocardial infarction, but it cannot directly visualize blockages. Imaging tests like coronary angiography are required for that.

The three types of ECG are:

  • Resting ECG: Performed while the patient is lying down and at rest. This is the most common type.
  • Ambulatory ECG (Holter monitoring): Records heart rhythms over a period of 24 hours or longer while the patient goes about their daily activities.
  • Stress or Exercise ECG: Conducted while the patient is exercising, usually on a treadmill or stationary bike, to assess the heart's response to physical stress.
  • Arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.
  • Evidence of insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle, or ischemia.
  • Signs of a previous heart attack, such as Q waves.
  • Indications of an ongoing heart attack, such as ST-segment elevation.
  • Abnormalities in the heart's conduction system, such as bundle branch block.
  • Changes in heart rate, like tachycardia or bradycardia.
  • Hypertrophy of the heart muscle, is often seen as an enlarged heart.
