Recognising common signs of cancer
There are over 360,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in the UK every year and with many cancer screenings and treatments being postponed or delayed due to the current pandemic, this week's blog share is from the fabulously informative health website Patient and is a useful reminder to regularly check for changes in your body.
Don't Ignore The Symptoms of Cancer
As we all now know, early diagnosis is key when it comes to the treatment of Cancer. Catch it early and not only will your treatment be less extreme but your chances of long-term survival hugely increase. So whether it's a lump that's appeared, changes to your bowel habits, or a bloated tummy that you've experienced for weeks, Patient advises you don't just ignore them and hope they'll go away, 'because where cancer is concerned, 'going away' is not going to happen'.
Know Your Body
Get to know what's right and normal for you. Regularly check yourself for changes in how body feels, looks and works! That way you're more likely to notice a change or something that doesn't seem right - whatever it is - it's important to tell your doctor. So, turn checking your body for lumps, bumps and irregularities into a routine part of your life.
What Symptoms Should I Look For?
Here are some of the signs Patient suggest it's particularly important to let your doctor know about.
- Blood in your poo
- Coughing and feeling out of breath
- Lumps and bumps (especially in breasts or testicles)
- Bleeding after menopause
- Persistent heartburn
- Changes to a mole
- Unexplained weight loss
Symptoms could be indicative of cancer or any number of other diseases and conditions - such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Menopause, Respiratory Disease, Type 2 Diabetes or Depression - so it's always best to get the checked out.
Don't forget ...
... the chances of that lump/blood/unusual symptom being cancerous are still very slim. It really is unlikely that your symptoms are caused by a serious problem, but getting checked out by your GP is important, and will put your mind at rest. Leaving it to just go away is never the answer when it comes to your own health and wellbeing. Practice self care and if in doubt, ask your GP.
